JM018 is an individually photographed ‘Katsura’ Japanese maple with an unusually tall, established form for its #3 container size. The tree has a strong central structure, numerous developing branches and a light, airy canopy that can be allowed to mature naturally or selectively pruned as it develops.
‘Katsura’ is especially valued for its early spring color. It is one of the Japanese maples that wakes up early, producing bright yellow-orange to orange new foliage accented by reddish margins. As the foliage matures, it transitions toward yellow-green and then green during summer before returning to warm yellow, orange and reddish tones in fall.
That seasonal transformation makes Katsura quite different from cultivars such as Bloodgood or Oshio-beni. It isn't being sold as a red-leaf maple. Its strongest show is the luminous orange-yellow spring flush, followed by fresh green summer foliage and another warm display in autumn.
This individual tree has a tall, upright framework with considerable height for a #3 Japanese maple. Several vigorous upper shoots are extending the canopy, while numerous smaller interior and lateral branches give the tree plenty of material for future development.
The relatively open young structure is actually useful here. A customer isn't buying a little graft with a handful of shoots. JM018 already reads as a young landscape tree, while still having room for its permanent branch structure to develop.

Katsura works particularly well as a small ornamental tree in Japanese-inspired gardens, courtyards, shaded planting beds, entrances and other locations where its changing foliage can be appreciated at close range.
For Central Texas, I would position JM018 where it receives morning sun and afternoon shade or bright filtered light. Protection from intense western afternoon sun and drying winds will help preserve foliage quality during the hottest part of summer.
Light: Morning sun to partial shade; afternoon shade recommended around Austin.
Water: Maintain consistent moisture while establishing. Avoid allowing the root ball to repeatedly become bone dry during summer, but also avoid constantly saturated soil.
Soil: Moist but well-drained soil with good organic content.
