‘Oshio-beni’ Japanese Maple – Large Specimen Tree JM017

$189.00

JM017 is a large, established ‘Oshio-beni’ Japanese maple selected for its height, developed trunk, branching structure, and outstanding seasonal color. This is the actual tree shown in the photographs, making it an excellent choice for a customer looking for a Japanese maple with considerably more immediate landscape presence than a young 1- or 3-gallon tree.

‘Oshio-beni’ is a classic upright Japanese maple prized for the dramatic transformation of its foliage throughout the growing season. New leaves emerge bright orange-red in spring, gradually softening into green with bronze and reddish tones through summer. As temperatures cool, the foliage transitions through brick-red before developing its signature brilliant scarlet fall color.

The cultivar develops into a well-branched, broad-upright tree with a spreading canopy. Unlike smaller dwarf Japanese maples, ‘Oshio-beni’ can eventually become a substantial garden specimen while retaining the refined foliage and branching associated with Japanese maples. Iseli Nursery gives it a garden size of approximately 15 feet tall by 12 feet wide.

About this individual tree

JM017 has a tall upright trunk with established caliper and mature-looking bark development, followed by branching beginning well above the container. The canopy already carries substantial secondary growth, while its relatively open structure leaves plenty of opportunity for selective pruning and future refinement.

This listing is for the exact tree pictured, inventory JM017.

Landscape Use

JM017 would work especially well as a:

  • Specimen Japanese maple

  • Entry or courtyard tree

  • Japanese-inspired garden focal point

  • Accent near a patio or outdoor living area

  • Understory tree beneath a high tree canopy

  • Feature tree in a shaded or partially shaded planting bed

Care Information

Light: Morning sun, filtered sun, or partial shade. Protect from intense afternoon sun in Central Texas.

Water: Keep evenly moist while establishing, but don't leave the root system waterlogged. Japanese maples perform best in moist, well-drained soil.

Soil: Well-draining soil with good organic content. Slightly acidic conditions are ideal, although ‘Oshio-beni’ can tolerate a broader soil pH range when drainage and moisture are appropriate.

Heat protection: Afternoon shade, adequate irrigation, mulch over the root zone, and protection from hot drying winds are particularly valuable in Central Texas.

Growth habit: Broad upright with a spreading canopy.

Mature size: Approximately 15' × 12' under typical garden conditions, although older specimens can become larger.
