Shin Deshojo Japanese Maple | JM019

Shin Deshojo is one of the most celebrated Japanese maple cultivars for spring color. New foliage emerges an exceptionally vivid scarlet to crimson-red, creating a brilliant display before gradually transitioning through reddish tones into green as the season progresses. Fall brings another seasonal change with shades of orange, scarlet and red.

JM019 is a large, well-established specimen with considerably more size and canopy development than a typical young retail Japanese maple. This individual has a tall upright structure, abundant branching and a broad, full canopy that gives it immediate presence in the landscape.

Its fine-textured palmate foliage and layered branching make Shin Deshojo especially well suited to Japanese-inspired landscapes, entry gardens, courtyards and other locations where a distinctive specimen tree can become a focal point.

In Central Texas, Japanese maples perform best with protection from intense afternoon sun. A site receiving morning sun followed by afternoon shade or filtered light is preferred. Consistent soil moisture, good drainage and protection from reflected western heat will help maintain healthy foliage through the summer.

You are purchasing the exact tree shown in the photographs, inventory JM019.

Key characteristics

Spring: Brilliant scarlet/crimson new foliage
Summer: Green foliage, often retaining reddish accents on newer growth
Fall: Orange to red seasonal color

Water: Regular, consistent moisture with good drainage
Landscape style: Japanese gardens, woodland gardens, courtyards and specimen plantings

Mature Size & Growing Information

There's surprisingly wide variation in published mature-size estimates for Shin Deshojo. Missouri Botanical Garden gives approximately 5–7 feet with the potential to eventually reach 10 feet, Monrovia gives 7–9 feet at ten years, while some growers list roughly 8–10 feet.

For your product page I'd simplify that to:

Mature size: Approximately 8–10 ft. tall and wide
Growth habit: Compact upright to rounded
USDA Zones: 5–9
Light: Morning sun / afternoon shade in Central Texas
Water: Consistent moisture with good drainage
Soil: Moist, organically rich, well-draining soil
Growth rate: Slow to moderate
Deciduous: Yes
